CBD FAQs

CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound and one of over 100 active cannabinoids found in cannabis. Both industrial hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants, however, industrial hemp is bred to be high in CBD and low in THC. (Marijuana is bred to be high in THC and low in CBD. THC is the compound in marijuana that causes a “high.”) CBD is not a psychoactive, so there is no “high.” Rather, it boasts numerous health benefits, in addition to a feeling of clarity, focus, and relaxation. Not only is CBD safe for humans and pets, but it has very few side effects.

Cannabinoids are the compounds that give the cannabis plant its medical and recreational properties. Among the 113 cannabinoids produced, CBD and THC are the most prevalent and the most well-understood. There are variety of cannabinoids, and some have been found to have antioxidant properties. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has numerous benefits, including anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. CBD has also been shown to possess anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, and anti-seizure attributes. THC is a cannabinoid known for its psychoactive properties, and is the reason you feel “high” after using marijuana. The THC cannabinoid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain relief) and antiemetic (prevents vomiting) properties.
CBD (cannabidiol) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two cannabinoids found in cannabis, the plant source for both industrial hemp and marijuana. Both industrial hemp and marijuana contain CBD. However, the majority of CBD products are derived from the industrial hemp plant, as industrial hemp contains a higher concentration of CBD. Marijuana contains a higher concentration of THC (the compound that causes a “high”). Even at extremely high doses, CBD will not make you high. CBD products may contain trace amounts of THC because this compound is present in the industrial hemp plant (in very minimal amounts). To be legal at the federal level, CBD products must contain less than 0.3% in trace amounts of THC. This micro-dose level of THC is important to the beneficial properties of full-spectrum hemp.
CBD is just one of the over 100 cannabinoids in industrial hemp. Oftentimes, “CBD” is used as a nick-name or abbreviation for broad spectrum or full spectrum hemp because these contain CBD, which is considered to be one of the dominant health-beneficial cannabinoids in industrial hemp. In reality, some companies make a CBD isolate. These contain CBD only and no other cannabinoids. In addition, broad-spectrum hemp may not contain all cannabinoids found in the industrial hemp plant, and usually does not contain THC. Full spectrum hemp oil refers to the pure oil extracted from an industrial hemp plant, containing unmodified cannabinoids and compounds. Unlike isolated or synthetic cannabinoids, full spectrum hemp oil contains an array of cannabinoids, as well as many essential vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, flavonoids and terpenes. These compounds have been proven to work more effectively when presented together in a synergistic manner, than when separated into purified molecules. Full-spectrum hemp oil has many more health benefits, compared to broad-spectrum and CBD isolates, and is considered a higher quality product.

Dosage varies greatly for each individual. In fact, each person’s dose will be determined by their response to it. Thus, it is best to talk with a nutritionist or herbalist to identify your dosage needs and starting point.

It is generally recommended that you begin with the lowest possible dose and monitor how you feel for a few days or so at this dose. If you feel you need more, from here you can slowly increase until you reach your desired result.

Yes. As of December 2018, CBD is legal nationwide (federally), so long as CBD formulas contain less than 0.3% THC.

The short answer is yes, it’s a possibility. It’s possible that CBD isolates, broad spectrum hemp, and full spectrum hemp may cause you to fail a drug test. This is because most drug tests screen for the cannabinoid family, not the specific compounds CBD or THC. Since CBD is in the cannabinoid family, it may cause a false positive test results. Before using it, you should speak with your employer to see if they would be willing to perform a blood test instead of a urine or saliva test. Blood testing can confirm the individual cannabinoids and verify that you are not under the influence of THC.

CBD is safe for your pets (dogs, cats, horses, and others) to consume just as it is safe for human consumption. The effects of CBD come from its ability to stimulate the mammal endocannabinoid system. CBD can alleviate a variety of physical and emotional ailments for pets, such as arthritis, joint pain, inflammation, anxiety, nausea, sleep and more.

Dosing is generally based on body weight. Be sure to ask your veterinarian for dosing instructions. It is generally advised that you start with the lowest indicated measurement and closely monitor your pet’s progress.

According to The American Animal Hospital Association, CBD can reduce pain and stress in dogs, and boost their dopamine levels, thereby lifting their mood. CBD also affects the canine endocannabinoid system by reducing inflammation and lowering cancer cell reproduction.

CBD can alleviate a variety of physical and emotional ailments in dogs, including:

  • Arthritis, mobility and joint pain
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Anxiety, fear and separation anxiety
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Muscle spasms
  • Allergies
