As we help customers navigate changes in CBD availability, we also want to help you care for the products you already have.

Whether you are stocking up to prepare for the upcoming December THC ban or just taking advantage of a good deal, proper storage is more critical than ever to ensure your CBD stays fresh.

Start with the label and a consistent storage spot

Check your product’s storage directions first. Different formulations can have different requirements, so the instructions on your bottle or package should guide you.

For products labeled for room-temperature storage, choose a dry cabinet or drawer away from windows, sinks, stoves, and heating vents. A bathroom cabinet can expose products to shower steam, while a parked car can become much hotter or colder than your home.

Keep products in their original containers also keep. Store them where children cannot see or reach them. These habits align with MedlinePlus guidance on storing medicines; always check the specific instructions for your CBD product.

Match your storage habits to the product

Ananda Professional’s guide to storing CBD oils, softgels, and topicals explains how light, heat, air, and moisture can affect different formulations.

Product What to do at home
CBD oils and tinctures Keep the original light-protective bottle, close the dropper cap promptly after use, and store it away from direct sunlight and heat. You may refrigerate CBD oil to extend its shelf life.
CBD softgels Keep the bottle dry, closed, and away from humidity. Store in a cool, dark place. If it contains a manufacturer-supplied moisture-absorbing packet, leave that packet inside; it is not for consumption.
CBD creams, balms, and salves Keep containers closed and away from heat. Wash your hands before removing product from a jar.

A little consistency helps: use the product as directed, close it, and return it to its designated spot.

Does CBD oil belong in the refrigerator?

Check the label or ask the manufacturer before refrigerating it. Ananda notes that refrigeration can thicken CBD oil, which may need time at room temperature before use.

Don’t assume that instructions for one oil also apply to your softgels or cream. Ask about the exact product you own.

What if a product looks or smells different?

An unexpected change in smell, color, or texture is a reason to pause and ask questions. For capsules, sticking together or becoming unusually soft, hard, or damaged also deserves attention. MedlinePlus recommends avoiding damaged medicines even before their expiration date.

For a questionable CBD product, set it aside and contact the manufacturer or bring the packaging to our team. Don’t taste it to check whether it is still good. Appearance alone cannot confirm its quality.

Keep track of what you already have

If you have unopened bottles at home, take a few minutes to organize them:

  • Check each label for its expiration or best-by date.
  • Put products with earlier dates in front.
  • Note when you open a new container.
  • Keep any directions about how long to use it after opening.
  • Ask about missing or unreadable dates instead of guessing.

Good storage is part of caring for a product; it doesn’t replace the manufacturer’s dating or instructions.
